I decided to break this chapter up into parts to make it more easy to read in one sitting. Well, all I have to say is that the plot thickens. Quite a bit. Hope you enjoy! and tell me your thoughts on the story so far. Good or bad, i wish to hear them.
Chapter Two
Neil jumped at the sound of his alarm. He stopped and looked around his room to find that his roommate was gone. Odd, his roommate hardly ever wakes up before Neil. He looked at the whiteboard where they would leave notes for each other.
My girlfriend felt sick all of a sudden, went over to take care of her.
The message was simple enough. He checked his phone for the time and noticed he had six unread texts. The first three were from his parents.
The first read: good morning
The second read: are you okay? Please respond
The third read: hopefully you’re still asleep. When you read this, turn on the TV.
Listening to what his parents said, he did turn on the TV and changed it to the local news station. The headline read: BREAKING NEWS: POSSIBLE TERRORIST ATTACK. Neil instantly pulled out his phone and called his mother to find out what’s happened so far. The phone kept ringing, no one picked up.
“Shit!” he said out loud, his eyes fixed upon the news. After several more attempts, he gave up. At least the missed calls would let his parents know he’s okay. The images on the screen showed a packed hospital parking lot as the words came out of the newscaster’s mouth: “Biological Warfare.” With his mouth gaping open, he checked his last three texts. They were from Kaylee and Stan.
Kaylee (Three Hours Ago): In case u have not heard, we need to leave. There’s been a terrorist attack.
Stan (Two and a Half hours Ago): Kaylee and I are meeting up. We’re getting off campus and to somewhere less populated.
Stan (Two Hours Ago): We just knocked on your door and got no response. If you are still alive, text or call us, we’ll come back for you.
Neil felt a ball form in his throat. How far away could they be by now? Two hours of driving could get them pretty damn far. He called up Stan and it rang twice before he picked up.
“Neil! You’re okay!” Kaylee’s voice said through the phone.
“Yeah, just asleep,” he confessed. “Where are you guys?”
“In my room right now, no one is being allowed off campus.”
“That’s stupid, what if we get attacked?”
“We all die.” Kaylee said, “The café is open, want to meet us down there for lunch?”
“Sure, I don’t want to die on an empty stomach,” Neil said in a joking voice. “See you guys down there.” He hung up the phone, turned off the TV, got dressed and went down for some lunch.
The café was relatively empty; most people on campus were freaking out in the comfort of their own dorms or drinking themselves till their doom. It was easy to spot Kaylee and Stan sitting in the open. He put his bag down and went to go get something to eat. He returned with a plate full of bacon, eggs, toast, and an orange.
“So what’s the plan?” Neil said.
“What plan?” Stan said.
“How are we going to get the hell out of here?”
“They have the place locked down tight, they won’t let anyone through the roads. They’re people with gas masks everywhere. I don’t even know where they came from!” Kaylee said.
“Only the roads?” Neil asked. “Are the roads blocked?”
“No, just cars going on and off campus,” Stan said.
“Let’s think about this,” Neil said.
“Oh great...” Kaylee said, knowing what Neil’s logic looked like.
“If we can get to a road, we can just walk along the road and possibly steal a car, right?”
“Right,” Stan said.
“But would we want to steal a car?” Kaylee asked.
“Steal a car, or die. Your choice,” Neil said. “Moving on. If the ways to the roads are blocked, and since the lake isn’t a road, the lake wouldn’t be blocked off.”
“Are you suggesting we swim to a road?” Kaylee asked. “I can be crazy, but not that crazy!”
“I already considered that, but then I realized it would be easier just to travel along the shoreline and get to someone else’s property and get to the road from there.”
“That would make more sense.” Kaylee added.
“Hey, its that girl we say naked last night!” Stan said as he pointed across the café. They watched Olivia scan her ID and look for a place to sit. Stan waved; he had something on his mind. She noticed them, blushed and walked over to the table. She dropped her bag quickly and went to go grab some food.
“Well, this will be awkward for her,” Neil said.
“Stan, what the hell?” Kaylee asked.
“I’m doing this for Neil!” Stan said.
“What’s the point? We’re all going to die.” Kaylee said as they watched Olivia start to walk back to the table. She sat down with a plate of pizza and a glass of orange juice.
“Hey,” Stan said. “How are you on this deathly day?” Olivia almost choked on her food. Kaylee hit him and shot him a glare.
“Bored, I’ve got some homework to do today. Probably going to go to the library after I finish eating.” Olivia said, trying to keep a natural state of mind after that awkwardly phrased question.
“You’re going to do homework? On a day like this?” Kaylee said, surprised. “We could all die!”
“I know, but if we don’t then I’ll have to turn in all my homework.”
“Neil, that sounds like something you would say,” Stan said with a smile. Kaylee laughed while Neil nodded his head in agreement.
“Too bad I didn’t say it though,” Neil said.
“Yeah, instead you came up with a crazy escape plan!” Kaylee said with a laugh. “Olivia, do you want to join us?”
“Wait, what are you doing?” Olivia said.
“Escaping off campus so we don’t die here,” Kaylee explained.
“Yeah,” Stan said, “If it is a Bio-bomb then we won’t know if it’s already gone off or not. It’s worth a shot.” That comment made it click with Neil.
“Shit.”
“Neil, what’s wrong?” Kaylee asked.
“We need to get our shit and get out, it’s already here.”
“How do you know?” Stan asked.
“My roommate’s girlfriend is sick and when I saw her yesterday, she was fine.” Neil explained this with panic in his voice. “Everything started going to hell today, so it might be coincidence, but maybe not.”
“Then we really need to go,” Stan said. Kaylee nodded and everyone turned his or her attention to Olivia.
“Fine, I guess I’ll go with you too,” she said, giving in to them.
“Sweet, now we’ve got a party,” Neil said. “Let our adventure begin!”
“You seem rather happy about this,” Olivia said.
“I’ve never been on an adventure this exciting before,” Neil explained.
“Also, no finals!” Kaylee exclaimed.
“Well, are we going to get going or not?” Stan asked. Everyone looked at each other. An ear-shattering scream filled the café as they were getting up. Entering the café was a group of girls; one started bleeding from her eyes as she doubled over in pain, she grabbed onto her head and went into the fetal position.
“Let’s use the back door,” Olivia said. Neil, Kaylee, and Stan all nodded in agreement. As the girl grew a crowd around her, the four got out of the café and started on the trail down to the lake and their escape.
They made it down and started to travel through ankle deep water to get to the closest property they could cut across to make it to the road. When they reached the dock, they climbed up it and started up to the person’s house. Cutting across the lawn, they arrived at the road.
“Now what?” Kaylee asked.
“We walk,” Neil said casually.
“How about we hitchhike instead?” Stan said.
“I like that idea a lot more,” Olivia added, reaching into her backpack and pulling out a towel.
“What are you going to do with that?” Kaylee asked.
“It could help us, you never know,” Olivia said with a plan forming in her head. They started down the road, away from the school. A few cars passed them, all speeding by, not wanting to stop for them in this crisis. Finally, a pickup truck stopped.
“So you need a ride?” The driver said. He looked to be in his mid fifties with white hair along the sides and bald on the top.
“That would be much appreciated,” Olivia said.
“Where are you trying to get to?” He asked.
“Somewhere we can get our own car,” Stan said.
“Well, as long as you don’t take mine, you can come with me,” the driver said. The four all thanked him as they climbed into his truck. The driver brought them to the closest car dealership to steal a new car. The man in the pickup truck drove off after leaving them to their crime.
“What kind of car should we get?” Kaylee asked.
“Something fast,” Stan said.
“I think we should go for something with four wheel drive,” Olivia said.
“Oh, I like that idea. I knew we had her for a reason!” Kaylee said. “What about a Jeep?”
“We can’t really go fast in a Jeep, it will tip over. But if we have the four wheel drive, we should be able to avoid the roads where we’ll need to go fast.” Neil said, thinking about possible situations.
“Yeah, let’s go with the Jeep then. It will be more fun.” Stan agreed with everyone else.
“Alright then, let’s do this,” Neil said. They smashed in the window and made it to the room with the keys. They grabbed one and made they’re way back out to the lot. They hopped into a Jeep and quickly drove off.
“I didn’t think that would’ve been that easy,” Neil said.
“Maybe all the police are preoccupied with the attack,” Kaylee said.
“That would make sense, let’s go with that,” Olivia said. “By the way, where are we going?”
“Well, Stan lives closest, so we should go to his house first. He can get anything he needs before we leave. I say that we go to my hometown. It’s small and we can get into the woods where no one would think to attack.” Neil explained to them as Stan nodded in agreement.
“Sounds good to me, let’s do this shit.” Kaylee said as they headed towards Stan’s house and the uncertainty that will follow them where ever they go. When Stan arrived at his house, his family was gone. He grabbed some stuff and a handful of food and let Neil take the wheel to their next destination: New Durham, New Hampshire.
