Well, part 12... This story is coming to its conclusion and I hope you've enjoyed it!!
Arriving back in the room where I left, Joel, Dr. Kelley, and Captain Redfield all standing and staring at me. Looking around, I notice the lack of Grantuun around.
“Ashley, what happened?” Dr. Kelley asked me as he backed away from Joel, reveling a bandage around his right forearm. I quickly explained what happened in my past adventure, leaving out the part where I gave Neil the gun.
“Now, What happened here?” I asked them, thinking about Joel’s arm.
“The Grantuun left to chase you and Captain Redfield and I made it here, fixed him up, then you showed up,” Dr. Kelley explained.
“Can we go back to the part where there was an entire ship back in time?” Joel said.
“Do we even have the technology to do that?” Dr. Kelley asked.
“No, we don’t,” Captain Redfield said. “It would explain why they didn’t time warp back to the future.”
“What do you mean?” Dr. Kelley asked.
“The technology they used wasn’t developed enough to come back the quick way. That’s why they brought Ashley back by close to light speed.” Captain Redfield explained as the four of us stood in the room. Dr. Kelley walked over to him and said something quietly to him. I say Redfield nod and then he said: “I agree, we should tell her.”
“Tell me what?” I said, assuming that I’m the ‘her’ they’re referring to. They looked at me and walked over.
“Why the Grantuun chose you,” Redfield said.
“You knew?” I said.
“I’ve always known, but you were never ready to know until now.”
“Fine. Just tell me.”
“They believe you to be the only one who can stop The Grantuun. It was decided that you were the one to stop him because you were the first sentient life form to time travel.”
“The only reason I time traveled was because they kidnapped me!” I yelled.
“Yes, we have noticed this. Sometimes I wonder if they picked you,” Dr. Kelley said.
“It would make sense for them to do that, I mean, picking a seemingly helpless little girl to be the only one who can stop them.” Joel said, butting into the conversation. I doubt that he knew about all this until now.
“What do you mean by ‘seemingly helpless’?” I asked him.
“Well, you’re not helpless, you do have us,” Captain Redfield said.
“So, you only seem helpless,” Joel said as he looked at his injured arm.
“What do we do now?” I asked.
“We stop them,” Redfield said. “They’re terrified of Ashley, so we use her against them. You know, psychological warfare.”
“Just the four of us?” Joel asked.
“The universe needs heroes,” Redfield began. “All throughout history, there have been people who have not been afraid of anything so they can help out the greater good. World War II, The North American Outbreak, The Destruction of Earth, and The Sofeeton War all had heroes. Now it’s our turn. We can do this.”
Joel stepped forward. “We don’t seem like much at all, I’m just a private and she’s a civilian, but if you think we can do this, them I’m with you.”
“Damn it, I’m a doctor, not a fighter, but I’ll do whatever I can to take down The Grantuun and end this.” Dr. Kelley said.
“What’s our plan?” I asked, assuming that they have one. Redfield brought me over to a window and pointed out at the sky. A giant space station was up in the atmosphere of the planet.
“That’s where the Grantuun is, that’s where we’re going to go.”
“How are we going to get there?”
“Hijack one of their ships of course.”
“This couldn’t be easy, could it?” Joel said with a sigh.
“Nope,” Redfield said. “We need to get going.” He picked up his rifle and a couple grenades, Dr. Kelley grabbed his medical equipment and handed me a rifle and new energy pistol. With his arm damaged, Joel pulled out his pistol too and took aim with his left hand, which is now obviously not his dominate hand.
Redfield started to move out of the room and down the hallway towards the stairs, Joel followed, Dr. Kelley motioned for me to go next and that he’d take up the rear. I followed behind Joel with my rifle up, but no Grantuun showed their faces. The rest of the journey was just at uneventful, until we got to the docks on the outskirts of the colony. We took some cover behind some crates and watched at patrols of Grantuun walked around.
“Wait here,” Redfield said. A blurry outline of his body now took the place of where he once stood. It moved and we watched as it killed the enemies.
“Did you know he could do that?” I asked Dr. Kelley, who looked just as amazed as I did.
“No, I didn’t,” he said. The Captain materialized in front of me. I jumped back, startled.
“All clear,” he said before motioning for us to follow. We piled into the fighter; this one didn’t have drop seats so I had to take a gunner seat. Redfield took pilot, Dr. Kelley took co-pilot, while Joel and I both took gunner seats. “Remember not to aim at enemy ships, that would be a dead give away that we don’t belong. Pun not intended.”
“Got it!” I shouted up to the Captain. I felt the ship left off the ground as we started flying up into the atmosphere. “Any idea on what we’re going to do?”
“The way I see it, even if we kill Grantuun, the armies will continue their attack. There also is probably an army up in that space station. We’re going to kill the army and the leader.” Redfield said while piloting us toward the giant ship.
“How would we do that?” Dr. Kelley said.
“Simple, bring down the station.”
“With us on it?” I asked.
“We’ll try to get off, but that might not happen,” Redfield said. “We can’t stop this war, but we sure as hell can make it shorter. We’re only four lives, we can save thousands, possibly millions.”
“Shut up!” Joel said from the gunner’s seat.
“Excuse me, private?” Redfield said.
“No one was objecting, I wanted you to save your breath,” Joel said. Dr. Kelley and I nodded in agreement; despite the fact Redfield wasn’t looking our way. We entered the hangar bay.
“Are you ready for this?” Captain Redfield said.
“Yes sir,” Joel said. We landed as the sound of the metal landing gear touched down in the metal hangar.
“Of course captain,” Dr. Kelley said. The fighter let out gassed to equalize interior and exterior pressure.
I swallowed the ball in my throat. This is it, the end of the line.
“Ashley?” Redfield said. “You okay?”
“As ready as I’ll ever be,” I said.
“Good, lets get moving then,” Captain said. The door opened up and we looked out into the hangar. Redfield took point, Joel in second, me third, and Dr. Kelley took up the rear. We stopped, directing our attention in front of us, I see a Wereesh standing there.
“Yargnam?” I asked.
“Yes, it’s me,” the large alien said. “I survived, so I have not yet fulfilled my purpose yet. I know what your up to.”
“He’s on the enemy station, how can we trust him?” Dr. Kelley said.
“He can teleport, remember? He’s been in my mind this whole time, reading my thoughts. Put it together.” I said to him, hoping they’ll allow his help.
“Good point,” Dr. Kelley said.
“Let him help,” Redfield said. A smile crossed my face.
“Thank you. Now lets bring down the sky,” Yargnam said.
