"Where the hell are we?" Kayti asked.
"According to the map...ummmm...." Takeshi quietly responded
"What are you doing? It goes this way." She glanced at it, flipped it over in his hands, let go, then reached out again and snatched it from him. She glanced at the windrose in the corner, then at the compass in her hand, and oriented the map to its proper heading. A gust of wind tore down the dusty, rubble strewn street, and the map strained to escape her hands. She glanced up and around at the skeletal remains of the skyscrapers, shards of glass still clinging to their exteriors.
"What do you think it was like here?" Takeshi asked. She looked over to see him doing the same thing.
"I wish I knew...come on, it's getting dark. We need to keep moving to the edge of the city. Then we can find somewhere to sleep for tonight."
The unlikely duo continued, Takeshi hefting two duffel bags - one for each of them, half filled with worn out clothing - over his shoulder, an old rifle in his hands. There was a worn insignia on the stock, and above the breach "1 Cara" was engraved in the worn steel. An ammo pouch dangled from his neck, full of mostly empty clips and loose rounds, which jangled as he walked. Kayti had a simple backpack resting on her shoulders, stuffed with the navigational gear only she knew how to use, some food and water, and their trusty flint and steel. A small revolver with four empty chambers was casually stuffed into the holster on her right hip.
It was growing dark, and there was still a lot of city left to go. It never seemed to end. Piles of steel and concrete, sheets of broken glass - the landscape was unchanging. They had been wandering it for days, and were hoping to finally escape. Spending another night here with those things was the last idea on their minds.
"Whatever. Let's just keep walking." Takeshi said.
